A feature or accent wall is an interior (or sometimes exterior wall) that can have a different colour, shade, design or material from the other walls around it. It’s normally painted in a strongly contrasting tone whether light or dark from the other walls around it.

• There are no strict rules but try avoiding a wall that isn’t symmetrical like a wall that has a slanted ceiling. This will highlight the ceiling angle and often make the room look smaller.
• A wall with a window is fine, but if you are choosing a dark colour then it will have a very strong contrast to the light coming in during the day which can be a bit over the top.

If you have light walls then it’s very common to use bold, dark and vibrant colours for maximum effect. You can be braver than you think and the effect will be all the more apparent.

If you have dark walls then going for a pale wash with only a subtle colour will work well.
